Toenail care is a fundamental task that has inspired many iterations of cutting devices. A quick look online shows there is no shortage of scissors and clippers on the market. Most are designed with normal nails in mind, or built down to a price. Several say they are designed with the intention of improving efficiency and reducing the painful consequences of problematic nails. But when put to the test, they fail miserably. They’re either blunt (or blunt quickly with use), they fail to grip the nail, making the task difficult to perform safely, or they’re just plain difficult to use. Moreover, even for professionals, there are a lot of instruments on the lower end of the price scale that couldn’t even be recommended for personal use. As a result, the search for the best toenail clippers for thick toenails especially, continues for many.
The Worst Toenail Clippers
I’ve seen my fair share of supposedly ‘professional’ toenail clippers. I’ve bought some of them for my own workplace, and been terribly let down.
Some are extremely uncomfortable in the hand. Slippery even!
Some clippers don’t seem to be designed very well because it takes a lot of effort to perform a single “clip”, even on nails of normal thickness.
The jaws have to open wide enough to get the the nail between the cutting edges.
I’ve received many that aren’t sharp enough to start with, let alone after repeated use.
And perhaps surprisingly, clippers that don’t grip the nail. These are the most frustrating ones of all. Unfortunately, they comprise a good proportion of the cheap “professional” range of podiatry clippers – the type you find at chemists and jewelry shops. And you won’t know it until you get home and use them.
When Trimming Toenails Becomes Difficult
Bad backs, knees, and hips; even a few excess pounds can quickly make just reaching your toes a colossal endeavor. But let’s say you can get down there adequately. Staying down there long enough to perform the task is another thing entirely. Anyone with respiratory issues will testify to that. Arthritis in the hands or weakness in the wrist culminates in low grip strength and adds a further layer of difficulty. Add any number of medical issues like circulation problems or peripheral neuropathy, and this quickly becomes not only a difficult task, but a dangerous one. And that’s to mention nothing of the toenails themselves being problematic – problems like ingrowing or thick toenails. The last thing you need is a sub-par pair of nail clippers adding to the difficulty and risk.
What is needed is a truly sharp set of clippers (stainless-steel of course) with a wide jaw that grip the nail, with design characteristics that maximize leverage and feel comfortable in the hand.
Given the scope of these requirements and potential pitfalls, is it even possible to address all of the above? Does a clipper exist that can tick all the boxes?
The answer is, Yes!

What Toenail Clipper Do I Use?
As a podiatrist, I buy the best toenail clippers I can find for use in my podiatry practice. They’re called Westminster Elegance toenail clippers. I’ve got about 30 pairs of them. They’re excellent. At over $150 a pop, they would want to be. They’re a leaf-spring clipper (I don’t like double-barrel springs – they break too easily). They give a concave cut not straight, which just seems to work better. They grip the nail nicely, so it’s easy to get started (I hate how cheap clippers slip right off). They’re sharp, of course. And as required in a podiatry practice, they’re all stainless-steel so they can be autoclaved over and over. I’m very happy with them.
But do I use a pair of Westminster Elegance clippers for my own personal use – on my own fingernails and toenails at home? No. I’ve got a much better clipper. Yes, better than the clippers I use at work. I use our very own BlisterPod Toenail Clippers. And so does my whole extended family – they all have their own.
Oh, The Handles!
The handles are ergonomically-shaped soft rubber handles that make these clippers so comfortable to use, even if your hands or wrists are weak. They don’t slip in your hands like thin metal handles can. And they provide excellent leverage to aid the cutting mechanism.
This combination of ergonomic handles and sharp edges make these toenail clippers the best toenail clippers for personal use. I defy you to find sharper! Simply, our BlisterPod Podiatrist-Recommended Toenail Clippers are, pardon the pun, a cut above the rest!

I use BlisterPod Toenail Clippers at home myself, all my family has a pair and I have countless patients and happy customers who use them too.
